I have now had this Tesla Model 3 for a day and around 150 miles of driving and have some initial thoughts. Unsurprisingly it mostly drives and feels like a normal car. The fact that it’s electric is almost lost on me when in motion. But it’s entirely alien when getting in and never turning a key or hitting a start button (and how damn quiet it is) . You just get in the car, tap the credit card on a nondescript place on the center console and then you put it in drive and go. It doesn’t turn off and it doesn’t turn on, that is so bizarre to me! So far I’m mesmerized by auto pilot on the freeway, it really does just feel like the thing is driving itself. But im also annoyed by the lane departure features when not in autopilot. It fights me when changing lanes even with the turn signal on and random lights or objects throw the radar for a loop and cause sudden braking. The regen braking is still taking some getting used to and not having gauges in front of me is weird too. But overall it’s a very good experience. I think disabling the safety nanny stuff entirely when autopilot is off would be a must for me but I can deal with fighting the car for now, it’s kind of entertainment in its own way. Will have a full story of the adventure last night and more driving thoughts and pictures soon!

If you’re going to park there, at least get a Slurpee!

Also, congratulations.

Lol well its a rental, no need for congrats. I wouldn't want to own an electric car unless I had a garage at home to plug the car in at night. Even though supercharging a "full tank" takes under an hour, it's still too annoying for me. I'd rather slow charge every night and then with the range this car has, I'd never need to worry about charging outside of road trips.

I had the same issues with the car fighting me, ask the owner if they don’t mind if you disable some of the safety features.

The fight to change lane is the lane departure and blindspot warning under the Autopilot tab.

Does disabling that during normal driving make autopilot not work though? I don’t want to have to mess with settings every time I use autopilot or disable it entirely. But yeah the owner is cool with playing around with the settings but id still intend on returning them to normal at the end.

It's weird because sometimes it works correctly and sometimes it doesn't. If I change lanes while turning on the signal that's when it reliably fucks up. But I've found even if I make sure to wait, sometimes it still complains and jerks the car around. That combined with the kerning of the regen braking makes me feel like an unsmooth driver for sure. I normally drive extremely smoothly outside of canyon roads so it's kind of odd.

Keep in mind that I know the controls for the European model which might be slightly different.

As far as my experience goes, disabling doesn’t effect autosteer.

Place both of those in passive rather than active, and rather than jerking you, it’s just going to make the lines on the autopilot go red.

Also, if it doesn’t have automatic lane changing, if you turn the stalk and wait a few seconds it disables autosteer and lets you overtake.
